CDM1550 Data Only

Post by jorenwendschuh »

What's the difference between the normal CDM (Waris) series, and the ones sold for data-only, for SCADA and such? Is there a different model number? external differences?

I set up several CDMs for use as water level data transmitters between single sites and multiple locations. Since the internal speakers are not used, I simply unplugged them, and programmed the radios to output data to the accy. connector. Program the radio for external mic audio, program the accy pins and set your levels accordingly.
I am not near the computer, so I can not open a codeplug and walk you through it at this time, but if you have professional CPS, there are several locations that point to this.

The "data only" version has the 16-channel LS+ chassis, and comes with a blank control head. You save about $150 by omitting the standard control head & microphone versus purchasing a 'regular' CDM1550-LS+. I believe the model# is the same, as the blank head is an option.

Ah! Thank you. Do you know if there were any modifications to the radio itself? As in, would swapping out the control head with a 'normal' CDM1550 head restore all functionality? I've not seen a schematic for this control head in any of the service manuals I've gone through either - is it just a blank face, or does it have a PCB in it?

What radios do you own?: AM/FM

I noticed an above post said "program for external mic audio"....will this unit function if all the connections are made with the accessory connector, like a RICK?

I've never seen an actual unit, just the MOL announcement, which I posted as the pic. I assume there must be some sort of pcb in it, since much of the actual 1550 'smarts' normally reside in the head. As well the announcement states "existing CDM1550LS+ chassis as well. Thirdly, they list both the 'blank' and 'standard' control heads as available options.

Not sure on the RICK question, but highly likely.

The R. I.C.K. is obsolete....

This is one replacement. Lots of them in service.
The ID-O-Matic II not only gives you the necessary CW ID, but it also processes audio and has all the timers you'd need for making a repeater with a pair of MaxTrac, Radius, GM300, or CDM mobile radios. This article shows some circuit improvements and how to wire the accessory connectors.

I'll trade you 3 RICKs for 3 ID-O-Matics II.
