Enabling GPS on Motorola XTS series radios Anyone using it?

Post by dafatman31 »

Hi All,
We're very interested on enabling the GPS function on my company's XTS5000R radios. We're trying to find out if anyone has successfully done it, performance, costs, general pros and cons and whether they could offer any advice.
I'm sure that some of you Senior Batboard members may have this info tucked away somewhere. :o

You mean like enabling it on the radio along with the GPS mic? It will give you your lat/long coordinates on the LCD at the push of a button. Or are you talking about backend infrastructure to be shown on a map at dispatch? If the latter, get your checkbook out and be prepared for a 5 figure check.

Unfortunately Motorola uses a proprietary format for their location data instead of NMEA like everyone else on the planet, so you can't just use any old mapping software, which is why you'll need very deep pockets if you're thinking of the infrastructure option!

Actually, Moto does use NMEA data as part of the TIA Teir 2 GPS standard. It is all outlined in the TIA standard.

AFAIK it's all Motorola LRRP (Location Request / Response Protocol) on the XTS, APX, TRBO and TETRA radios?

That's what they claim -- there are a handful of implementation differences here and there between ASTRO 25, MOTOTRBO and TETRA though regarding things like IP addressing.
