Leaving GP340 working in charger

Back in the days of P210 and similar I can remember that leaving radio working in charger for prolonged periods of time would quickly kill the battery.

Is there combination of battery and charger for GP340 that would allow radio to be on RX in charger most of the time w/o any ill effects for battery? Li-ion perhaps?

Not really. Chargers for Li batts tend to be more sophisticated than the older brute force rapid / trickle rate chargers of the past. Because of that, you may get more mileage out of Li batts on your radios used this way. But, you should either break the habit and use the radio the way it was intended, and be ready to replace your batteries more often as a cost of doing business.

Well I'm asking since mobile phones can work like that, have one older Motorola phone which is used solely as backup for data connection and after three years of 24/7 operation battery is still as good as new so I thought there was also improvement on that field with radios.

Friend of mine has some funny Chinese radio that uses Nokia batteries and is charged via USB port and it seems it also don't mind being plugged in power all the time.

I've found some strange non OEM li-ion batteries on ebay that have charging port and it's own small wall plugged charger, has anyone tried those?

Speaking of Li-Ion only now have I noticed that I already have some huge Li-Ion battery on radio - NNTN5510BR. Is charging controller integrated in these batteries?

Yes there's a way. Use an Impres battery and charger. Impres lets you leave the radio powered on while on the charger.

Let me get this straight. You leave the radio & battery on while in the Impres charger, using the Impres battery. The solid yellow light is on to indicate the battery is fully charged. As the battery drains because the radio is on, the charger will automatically go back to charging the battery w/o removing it from the charger? GARY

That's a good idea. The Impres will "manage" the battery which is something the older chargers could not do. You would get the maximum life possible given the situation.

Not to argue the finer points too much, but keeping a device plugged into a charger 24/7 for years, and then expecting the battery to deliver full rated capacity at time of use is unrealistic. Whether it's a laptop, or a cellphone, or a flashlight, unattended batteries left in a charger die. When you need the device, chances are it won't be ready, and you cannot get full performance out of them. Someone has to actively manage the inventory to keep it in a constant state of readiness.

Yes, very unlikely that you will have a fully charged radio when you grab it and need to use it. And most likely when you do grab it to use it, it'll have less of a charge in it than when you put it in the charger? I've always beeb a fan of taking it off the charger when it's charged.
