Converting a Motorola Astro+/ Dash to Remote

Post by hawkspringsfire »

I have a Motorola Astro Plus that I am wanting to convert it into a remote mount radio. I know you need the interconnect board and I think that I have it. Pictured below. Here are a couple of questions that I have.

1- Is this the right board that I need to convert it into a remote mount radio?

2- Is there anything else that I need besides the board and cable? Will the regular remote mount cable work or do I need something special?

3- In the software where I need to change the radio head...do I do it before or after I convert it into a remote version? Or do I do it to the codeplug then download the new codeplug?

Plug in the regualar remote cable and go. No codeplug changes are nessesary. Spectra/ASTRO Spectra remote mount cables are all the same.

The only difference is that your model number wont reflect the actual configuration, but thats a non-issue. Plent of "D" radios setup as trunked mount and vice-versa. I believe with the XTL radios and newer they dropped the dash/trunk mount model desingations.

Interestingly enough, the BSM does not give a part number for the interconnect board but states to "see your dealer" for the proper part. If I can get the DSM to download, that might show it.

That is the correct interconnect. Sounds like you want to change control hrad types from like a w5 to w9 or something like that. If so your in for a rude awakening. Can't do it wothout special tools.

I have a W4 head. I just want to get a full size radio out of my console so I have more room. I just bought the back piece and the remote cable off eBay. Hope to get this project completed by late early Oct.

Yup you should be fine then the radio will program through the kvl port on the drawer after the conversion. Jason
