CF29 ON W7 OR stay with XP
Hey all,
I was just wondering I have an cf 29(Yeah i know) with an Intel Pentium processor 1.40 ghz and less than 2GB of ram. The machine is currently running XP SP3.I used to use this machine as my go to LT I took it on trips I did radio Programming and everything... I have since bought a MAC as my replacement LT... I would like to re format the HD on the CF29 and Load Win 7.. so that all i have on it is CPS and an email program.. I believe that i am maxed out on Ram.. do you folks think that this machine will even boot up on W7? or should i just nuke the HD and just reload XP,cps, AND my email and leave it at that.
BTW will CPS even run on win 7? I have never tried it

If you have a choice, I would stay with Win-XP PRO. Networking sucks on Win7. Depending on the programs your running, it will dictate which is better. I prefer to stay with Win-XP.
Not too many of the older Motorola software will run on the Win-7. So your better off with the Win-XP for those programs. If you have any software that needs DOS, the computer may be too fast.

stay with xp with the cf-29.. works alot better than windows 7 ..windows 7 sucks for motorola programming

Thanks for the replies...
I'm running the latest version of CPS for my old skool cdm's on the CF 29. .... she's awfully slow browsing the Inet but for programming she works like a champ. I use the ribless cable for programming but like i said it works... I was in Japan for a month and keeping intouch with folks back home and browsing the net was pretty hard to swallow.. thats the reason i bought the MAC... so the next time i go anywhere (besides I hate the stupid questions at the airport- you would think they never saw a Laptop before)The next time it will be Me and my friendly non threatning looking MAC... The CF will be for field Programming.. I have plenty of friends who cant program their gear thats where i come in..
I have a fresh legal copy of XP that i bought that i might want to use instead of the Panasonic disk that came with the CF.. I might go that route or contact the depot where i bought the CF to make sure that i can.
Thanks for the replies

Without some hacking, win 7 will not run on that machine, it's touchy on a cf30.

Lance: What?
Kilgore: Napalm, son. Nothing in the world smells like that.
Kilgore: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...

spectra!,
good to hear from you..... i did not think it would run.. I think it's destined to be happy running XP and that will be it. it runs and plays with the best of them.. I just think the way it's configured it's best left to have CPS,EMAIL,AV and i think that will be it.. it's never let me down cept that it's as slow as Mollasses, but when programming it's pretty fast... i guess it's like the OLD days when running MAXTRAC, AND SABER SW.. REMEMBER? you had to find a slow LT to run that stuff..

Re: CF29 ON W7 OR stay with XP
I have followed some of the toughbook forums discussions on hacking these to get win 7 to run, they have a hack, but I always had good luck with my 29, and never saw the need. Of course, I am currently using a cf31, so it already runs 7 on it. i have some old Toshiba laptops for those older radio's, they seem to work good for that, I can't believe that we thought they were so fast........ back in the day.

Re: CF29 ON W7 OR stay with XP
Well thats true!!
I dont have any of the older stuff any more nor do i know anyone who does still.. when the older slower Laptops dried up- so did my intrest. I would see them Pop up on Ebay but the prices were just silly. so i got rid of all my old radio equipment and moved up... I'm running old skool cdms and Ht1550's now... to some of the folks who are running TRBO and some of the newer stuff I guess MY stuff is THEIR saber, and Maxtrac.
I guess if i ever do decide to upgrade then i will get a CF31 but by that time they might be up to CF 51...I remember the Toshibas and the Grid Laptops... boy those were the days.

I had to actually use DOS commands the other day, I thought I was going to have to phone a friend, total brain lockup.giguchan wrote:Well thats true!!

I still have some old radio's kicking around, re-banding and narrow banding killed off most of it though.

Re: CF29 ON W7 OR stay with XP
I have a CF29 that I run XP on. It was a refurb I bought off ebay with a fresh copy of XP for $350 shipped. It has all my Astro, Astro25,CDM and most later stuff on. I had to use it as my desktop for a few weeks when my house HP took a dump. It worked ok for some surfing and stuff. I keep and old Sony viao running win98 for anything older and DOS related.
Re: CF29 ON W7 OR stay with XP
You mentioned that the computer was slow on the internet. What browser are you running? Internet Explorer sort of sucks and many have gone over to other browsers. I have found the use of Firefox to meet my demands and keep me out of trouble. It seems to be fast and allows you to set up a number of the normal parameters you don't get with IE7 or 8.
The other suggestion that I would give is to do a defrag and scan disk on the hard drive regularly. In the few years that our company have been using the CF29, the hard drive seems to be the weak spot in those computers. If you don't use the restore disks, then you will need to obtain the drivers to get the computer up and running after installing XP from a CD.
The newer versions of the CF29 had a USB connection on the back. The older units didn't have that extra USB connection.

Re: CF29 ON W7 OR stay with XP
Hey fellas,
$350 shipped? wow thats a pretty good price i think when i bought this guy I was over $1500.. I had extra RAM installed but that still did not brink me up to a GB.. I t does seem to be faster tha last time i nuked the drive and re formatted.
I think i might have to do it again...
I'm the latest of IE. when i was Over in Japan... it seemd that it prefered Safari, i mean it was a lot faster. it just seems that after a while it would just Bog and the Green HD led would never stop. I was wondering if maybe one of the sticks of memory went bad.. I had a brand new stick go bad on my Desktop replaced it and i was up and running. I defrag TOO much! which is a habit i have to get out of since my Desktop has 2 SSHD'S...i dont want to shorten the life of those drives so i only do it when it is needed. I use "defragger" and the utility that come with XP.
I think that i might re do the Drive and use the recover disks.. might be better in the long run..
