XTS3000 - is there a DOS RSS version or just CPS?

Is there a DOS RSS version for the XTS3000 or is it just a Windows CPS version?

With Jedi radios I like to start with RSS first and then switch to CPS if I get "codeplug too new".

I think R05.03.00 is the latest version of CPS?

Aside from the older analog Saber series radios, the Astro series, as well as the XTS3000 have all been CPS.
Astro Sabers use the same CPS as the XTS3000, and if the Saber is IMBE capable, with the 1 meg vocon, the platforms are identical, hence the same version of CPS for both radios.
Same goes for the TUNER version for service.

Never used RSS for any Astro series portables, and when I was buying, nothing but CPS was available...hence my comment.
I don't miss RSS forprogramming anything these days, and everything is CPS, no need to walk backwards.

9.05 is the RSS for Astro Sabers. I have it and have used it. Eventually got the CPS version but the RSS version worked
fine.

Matter of fact, back when the CPS first came out for these radios, you could go back & forth between the RSS, & the corresponding CPS to program the radio, but once the newer CPS came out, you could no longer go back to RSS. GARY

My XTS3000 was manufactured in Jan 2004 (serial # 620CEA01**)

Any chance I will be able to use DOS RSS or will the radio have already been progged with CPS at the factory?

I did some searching and found out that if the radio had been progged with CPS R02.05.00 or earlier then you can still use DOS RSS R09.05.00.

But if CPS R03.00.00 or later has been used then you can only use CPS.

DOS RSS R09.05.00 was released in Sept 2002.

CPS R04.00.00 was released in 2004 vs XTS3000 build date of Jan 2004 ........so I guess its no go on using DOS RSS??

I have found that the DOS help pages with Jedi radios are better than CPS help pages...especially for providing factory default values. With the Jedi CPS there is often no mention of any default values. You can also move through freq input screens faster with DOS with no random page flickering so you can easily spot an incorrect value just by looking for a change in the screen "composition"...with CPS I find that there are lots of random screen flickers rather than just where there is a different input value!! I also think DOS is earlier to hex edit if you want to expand band limits etc

UPDATE : I convinced myself that an XTS3000 manufactured in 2004 would have been progged with CPS.

However, I just used CPS to read the XTS3000 and when I checked out the Tracking Info, it was last progged with DOS RSS on 31 Mar 2004 at 3.39!!

I did not write back to the radio so I think it should still be possible to use DOS RSS? I've done this before with Jedi stuff ie. read with CPS but then reverted to DOS???...I guess I will soon find out!!!

AS long as you didn't write back with CPS, RSS should still work. I used RSS 9.05 for years, & was used to it, but now all my radios use CPS, & even if I could go back to RSS, I wouldn't. GARY

I guess I should have just used CPS but I always like to use the same version of software that was originally used to program the radio!!

I'm just about to install DOS RSS R09.05.00 - thankfully its on two floppy sized files so easy to install - no need to use my PCMCIA SD card adpater which is useful for file sizes bigger than a 1.4M floppy.

Not sure what the facination is with RSS use over CPS but I can always roll it back for anyone to be used with RSS as long as you provide me with the s-record.

For me it was always about ease of use, as MTSX/Astro RSS was the first Motorola software I learned on. Then there's also the 15-mode trunking scan list hack, though with the advent of rebanding that one's rapidly becoming obsolete.

I'm finding that I cannot install the XTS3000 DOS RSS. Its coming up with an insuffient memory message...something like "RSS requires 500,000 bytes but only 20,000,0000 bytes available"???? (so should be plenty). I am using an original RSS "install" version which requires uncompression.

I'm thinking that maybe I need more RAM? I think the laptop is running 64MB. Its an IBM Thinkpad 380XD made around 1998.

Looks like I will be using CPS afterall!!!

You probably need the extended memory that is loaded on DOS boot in the config.sys file.

We never used Thinkpads in our shop, except once as an interim unit and I recall the same issue...reporting that it needed "X" amount of disk space, but only finding "Y" amount...which was much greater than "X"! I chalked it up to a crappy old DOS program not recognizing larger 'modern' (at the time) hard drives...but maybe it was something to do with the Thinkpads themselves?

Does this Thinkpad have any sort of Windows on it?

I tried modifying the config.sys file as recommended in the install routine but that did not work.

I guess it could be something to do with the Thinkpad TP380XD...but I use it with other Moto stuff with no problems...but I guess the XTS3000 DOS RSS probably needs much more memory than earlier radios. Usually my 1998 Thinkpad is "newer" than the DOS RSS but as the XTS3000 DOS RSS is dated 2002 then its 4/5 years newer than than laptop!!!

The Thinkpad also runs Win98..I tried to install the RSS using Windows but had the same problem as well as an issue with seeing both a C and D drive. I also use a bootdisk to run pure DOS..so its not a "DOS in Windows" issue.

My thoughts weren't the "DOS in Windows" issue. I was going to suggest trying to reboot the computer using the "MS-DOS Mode for Games with EMS and XMS support". I find it works great for getting around weird issues like this. See further info here:

See my other posts about RX audio issues. Do you know if the Ultra Narrow 5.76KHz IF filter only works if you are using 12.5KHz spacing, 2.5KHz dev? What happens if you use 20kHz spacing, 4 KHz dev?
