My old Win 7 PC that ran Astro Spectra CPS and had a serial port, just up and died on me while I was fiddling with a codeplug. The computer won't even boot to the BIOS screen, NADA, nothing, just whirling fans and a green light.
So I somehow got the CPS to run on my cheapest Windows 7 PC (won't work on three other Win7 machines!) but it does not have a serial port. A quick test with a USB adapter failed. The working CPS PC has two low profile slots, one with a full size PCI-E slot, and the other with the mini PCI-E slot.
If I purchase a PCI-E serial port card for one of these slots, is that considered a "real" serial port? Also, doesn't it suck to spend hours configuring a codeplug, and poof, it's gone!
Thanks guys!
Paul
I need a "REAL" serial port?

The magic word here is "16550" - that's the part number of the standard PC UART that your RSS is looking for. Search for "PCIe 16550" .
This is my opinion, not Aeroflex's.

And this for my laptop..... http://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/ ... er~EC1S950
Would the $15 ExpressCard with 16950 work? The price is right!

Re: I need a "REAL" serial port?
I posted a question regarding a Startech card I wanted to know if it would work, but the post never was approved, so I went ahead and bought it based on the "16550" thing, which I have no idea what that means.

I got it today, installed it, and what a surprise, cannot communicate with the radio. Tried two different RIB cables, still nothing. The RIB/cable setup works fine with another computer, and the serial port works to communicate with my Uniden scanner.
So, if someone can please tell me the correct serial port PCIE low profile bracket card to get THAT works, please help me. And I hope the moderators approve this post, as I really don't wish to spend hundreds of dollars experimenting and buying a dozen different cards till one works!
