using W7 on a W9 Radio

Post by asmitty0010 »

Seen this done with a W5 on a W9 astro spectra (ebay). I realize the channel names will not be the same as a W5/7 head only allows 8 characters but can you operate an astro spectra w9 with a w7 head?

Kinda sorta, but not really. The radio will power on and you can plug a mic into it and talk on it, but the SB9600 button assignments (firmware-level, not the button assignments you can change is RSS/CPS) in the W7 head don't line up with what the W9 codeplug is looking for so basic functions like channel up/down and volume up-down won't work.

That is correct. You will need to get the s-record/codeplug upgraded if you want to switch control heads.
