Saber III - only 3 DTMF keys work - any fix?

Post by g8tzl2004 »

I have a Saber III where only 3 DTMF keys work - SELECT , 5 and 8.

When you press the other keys there is no bleep.

Is this a programming issues or hardware fault? I'm not aware that you can program individual DTMF keys to be active or not?

I have opened the radio and cleaned the pins at the base of the radio. I also checked the flex but it did not appear to be dislodged but I did not pull it out and clean any contacts. The DMTF flex appears to be soldered to the PCB?? But I'm not sure if there is some kind of plug for the DTMF flex - if so maybe I just need to clean some pins?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

What radios do you own?: What's a radio?

The keypad flex should be socketed on the main chassis. Just gently lift straight up.

sometimes just wiggling the connector where it plugs into the main board is enough to make it make contact a simple fix. Its happened to me before.

Thanks for the feedback - I will try removing and cleaning the DTMF plug pins.

I have been reading that sometimes Saber III cases are put on a Saber II body.

A Saber II has NO DTMF keypad, just the 3 Menu, Select and Enter keys.

I'm wondering if my Saber is actually a Saber II in a Saber III body.

Can this have the effect of only 3 keys working..BUT rather than the Menu, Select and Enter keys, its the Select , 5 and 8 keys?

I have an MCS2000 which has very early firmeware which causes the front keys not to match the correct function.

A saber II will only have those 3 top row keys on the front of the front chassis A saber III will have the full keypad. IF you were to put a model III front on a radio programmed as a II only the top 3 buttons Menu Select and Enter will work. If you put a II on a III same thing.

Not fully true. In the later years of production and service, a full keypad was used on both models. Only the programming and housings made the difference.

Now that you mention that I do recall that the Con 6 and 7 radios were that way..
