Is it possible to send QC2 tones through an XTL 5000 without distortion?
Our FD/EMS channel has finally been put into the console, but the dispatchers still use the old Icom to send out the tones. I was told that because the radio is a digital radio that when the tones are generated by the console, they get distorted by the radio, and that the pagers/handhelds don't recognize them.
So what's the real deal? The console is doing a poor job of synthesizing tones? The XTLs DSP is doing a poor job of pulling out the tones, or the DSP is doing a poor job of re-synthesizing the tones?
From what the tech told me, everybody has this problem.
Although we can do mixed mode, the channel is still analog only.
Thanks!
Tim

The XTLs have the capability to generate QC2 internally (unlike the APX... grumble). Why not just send the tones that way?

Sounds like it's time for a qualified technical person to look at the tones going out over the air.
Ahhhhh, most consoles are designed to be pretty good about synthesizing tones without distortion, etc. It's not a hard job;
BTW, what kind of console? Brand/model, etc.
If 'everybody' has this problem, it points back to the infrastructure equipment; console, transmitters, whatever is between the console & transmitter (phone lines, control station, etc.)

It could also point to the tech not knowing how to properly set up the equipment in question. To the OP, knowing what infrastructure would be helpful in this case.kb4mdz wrote:If 'everybody' has this problem, it points back to the infrastructure equipment; console, transmitters, whatever is between the console & transmitter (phone lines, control station, etc.)

I was trying to be ahhhhh, non-confrontational about the techs for the system. You're right, tho, if it's something within the system, it's the techs' responsibility to make it right. As I said in a PM to Tim, discipline for audio levels is very important. Oh, the tales we could tell on here....gtriever wrote:It could also point to the tech not knowing how to properly set up the equipment in question.
