RLN4008E power question?

Hi All, I just bought a used RLN4008E Rib and it has a 9 volt battery installed. It works fine using the battery but do I have to disconect the bat
tery when using the wall transformer?. Thanks. Davie n threeCHU at atlanticbb.net

infact, it would be beneficial to you to make sure that the battery is fully charged / new...because that battery will save your bacon when you get (the always dreaded) mid-write power outage and your wallwart isn't on your UPS system...or the co-worker / boss / wife / kids / dog run by and the wall wart gets pulled out of the outlet and you now have a brick on your desk.

always, always, ALWAYS use both. only program from one or the other in times of dire need.

I realize this is an old post but I just picked one of these up, & my 9 volt wall wart plug won't fit on this rib, but my 12 volt one will. Is it safe to use 12 volts on this rib through the power jack, or do I need 9 volts through the plug? Center pin positive? GARY

The 12 Volt will work fine. In fact, IIRC, the Motorola wall wart for the rib is a 12 Volt unit.

Many radios can supply the SWB+ line through the program cable. This is not always an option unless you have made your own cables. A check on the batlabs.com site for the different cables will show you which ones will work this way. Saves having to worry about if the battery is good or if you have an outlet nearby to plug in the wall wart.

The RLN4008 circuit uses a LM78L05 regulator to drop its input voltage down to 5V. They have an operating input range of 7V - 20V. Some of the Kawa knockoff RIBs use the same circuit with a modern SMT regulator subbed for the DIP-package 78L05.

And add in the diode drop and the stock regulator goes out of regulation at 8 volts. All our rebuilt/repaired R.I.B.'s get a LDO regulator that goes down to 6.7 volts input.

Also when you are not using your R.I.B., turn it off so the poor old 9 volt battery does not go flat.....

All my prog cables get power from the radio being programmed for the R.I.B..
