MIP5000 Gateway Power Supplies

Post by escomm »

So was up at a customer's over the weekend troubleshooting some gateways. The dang things would reboot themselves every time they tried to write the channel configuration to the gateway as downloaded from the MIP console. After much grief and troubleshooting and swapping gateways, it became evident the power supplies were causing the problem. Seems when we did the install in early 2011 Motorola was using 5V 2.4A power supplies. As part of our work we installed a new digital gateway and noticed the power supplies Motorola is now shipping are 5V 4A power supplies.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Any idea why Motorola originally spec'd out a 12 watt power supply but now feels the need to ship 20 watt power supplies??

I've never had that problem with any of the tone or digital gateways on the 4 systems I have setup, and I don't know what size power supply they have. I have however considered just using a single large power supply for a group of them in a single rack. I suppose then the problem you run into is that if the power supply fails then everything is dead.

Well these ones were local gateways, though I doubt that has any bearing on the source or the resolution to the problem. I noticed the new power supplies are made by a company called Sino American. I get the impression they're more Sino than American...
