I have just acquired a VHF GM950 N4 - this is the type with the large LCD head and uses an external speaker. Unfortunately, there is a problem with the radio. The GM950 N4 version looks a bit like a GTX/LCS2000/GM350 with an MCS2000 Type III head.
The radio powers up and channel info is displayed on the LCD but there is no backlight
The radio is RXing (flashing LED) but there is NO audio from the speaker. Likewise when you power up the radio there is no bleep and no white noise when you open the squelch.
When you TX, the radio is only putting out, say, 1mW - no enough to move my power meter, but audio is being TX'ed.
You can hear a low level hiss from the speaker BUT when you RX a signal you hear no received audio or change in the level of hiss....just the flashing LED. RX sensitivity appears OK ...just no audio.
You can hear a very low level hiss from the speaker even if you switch off the radio using the front key. The LCD switches off but you can still hear the hiss. The volume control has no effect on the level of hiss.
You can read and write to the radio no problem - so the codeplug is OK.
Any ideas?
Its like both the TX PA and the RX audio amp are faulty.
Maybe the voltage regulator which powers the PA and audio amp is faulty?
Maybe its my imagination, but when I smell around the rear accessory socket there is a bit of a burnt electrical smell.
Thanks
