motorola desktrac audio interfacing to rc 96 controller

When connecting rx and tx audio should we be using flat audio or the pre emphasis and de emphasis? Im getting mixed answers from other sites. Motorola desktrac repeater. Currently it is connected as pre and de emphasis and we are having some issues with dtmf decoding. Thanks!
