Motorola Mobility, the Libertyville-based cell phone business with a longtime Chicago pedigree, will have Chinese ownership, under a deal announced Wednesday afternoon.

Google, which owns Motorola Mobility, said it will sell the smartphone business to Lenovo for $2.91 billion. It is China's largest-ever tech deal and Lenovo's second major buy on U.S. soil in as many weeks. Lenovo last week said it would buy IBM's low-end server business for $2.3 billion.

In this deal, Lenovo, which acquired IBM’s PC business in 2005, will get the Motorola brand and products, including the Moto X and Moto G.

Google will maintain ownership of the vast majority of the Motorola Mobility patent portfolio. But as part of the deal, Lenovo will receive a license for the portfolio of patents and other intellectual property.

this is exactly what I predicted and said about 10 years ago. Like all these greedy American companies, they are selling us out. Move our jobs across the border (NAFTA) was the first phase, splits and divestiture the second, and third and final phase is selling off those pieces. It has happened time and time again.

Pretty soon, we will all be working for Baogeng and getting Mcwages, being forced to buy our benefits in the "marketplace". With 1 out of 4 citizens in my state receiving benefits, it saddens me everytime I hear about this.

But this is what you get in a corporate state.

And if you think Solutions is immune from this, let's revisit this topic again in 2024. Motorola, a brand name of Shenzhen Telecom. Watch and see.

This deal makes sense. Google isn't a manufacturer. Lenovo is. And it let's Lenovo break into the cellular market.

Basically this deal values Motorola's intellectual property at about $4 billion.

Remember that Google paid about $12 billion for MMI. Then sold the set top business for a little over $2 billion. They got to keep $3 billion in cash as part of the sale. Lenovo paid just under $3 billion for what was left of Motorola. And of course Google is keeping the IP and then licensing it to Lenovo on the cheap.

As for whether it makes sense, that's irrelevant. The point is that Chris Galvin started Motorola on a downhill path and each of his successors has done nothing but aid that journey right along.

Once the Chinese get hold of it, holding the IP won't mean doodle squat. The Chinese care not at all for patent or IP or any other rights when it comes to duplicating technology and product. RIP Motorola and US business.

Especially since the Chinese government gives incentives (read=funding) for Chinese companies to STEAL IP from western competitors. Yep, I see a Baofeng PXA7000 knock off coming soon....
