XTS 5000 Just quit

Post by drspinbag »

My XTS5000 just quit working. It was fine one minute, then the screen went blank, and it won't power up. The battery was almost full, and I tried other batteries. I disassembled it, reseated all the ribbon cables, checked the little battery on the board. Still dead. If I were to throw new parts at it, what board is most likely the culprit, the Vocon?

What radios do you own?: APX

I would start with checking the fuse on the RF board first.

Stupidity creates job security!

If your radio has old firmware, programming it with the latest CPS will not add any new features unless you have the latest firmware to match..

CPS = Customer Programming Software, Not CPS Software.

The fuse on the RF board is good. It's the XTS5000 Model III UHF 403-470 MHz.

Was it running on a trunk system when it quit?
Kilgore: Smell that? You smell that?
Lance: What?
Kilgore: Napalm, son. Nothing in the world smells like that.
Kilgore: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...

No trunking system was programmed in. I think it's hardware because I can't even read a codeplug. No backlight, no nothing.

It was the RF board. Switched it out, and it works like a champ again!

Except that it needs a full alignment, if you haven't already done that.
