Pyramid SVR 200U in the HAM Band

Post by k4tdo »

Hey gang, I have 2 of these puppies I would really like to put in the 440 MHz ham band.
I have made the programming cable on ths website and am using a Motorola RIB.
I keep getting "SVR 200 not responding" when I try to read the radio.
If I get the silly thing to read how do I get the software to allow me to put in 440 freqs?
If I just open the software and creat a new code plug (for lack of a better word) the CPS says "Data must be in rang of 450-470"

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I can be emailed directly at k4tdo at dishmail DOT net

HI,

According to the person at Pyramid I contacted a year or two ago, these are not designed to go into the HAM band, and will perform poorly when asked to do so. It's a bummer I know...

You should be able to download the software from PYRAMID. Don't know what else to say...

Update, I have discovered that the DOS software, available from the Pyramid website, will allow 440 MHz frequencies and 2 meter ones in the VHF version. I'll post back hopefully this week on the performance of them in the 440 Band.
I have 2 I want to attach to VHF Spectras (mid Power) I have in stock.

I wanted to do the same thing, so I asked the factory engineers. They said it was not a good idea and would not work well. When you do test this, please use a service monitor and let us know if there are any spurs and how the output power level is.

OK gang I am still stuck, I still can not read the silly little repeater.
I have the Factory Motorola RIB RLN4008E and made my cable per this diagram.
http://www.batlabs.com/svr200.html
But I still get SVR200 not responding.

Ant ideas....ans yes I have checked and double checked my cable connections.
I am using just a plain old MONO plug for the small jack inside the front of the SVR200.
When I plug it in I get OPT LED lite.

Suggestions?....Tim K4TDO

I always use the Vertex Programming cable with my SVR and it works pretty good.

You can use a Motor RIB with the 2.5mm plug, but the Moto uses a stereo (3 cond) plug with TIP, RING, SLEEVE with the programming signal on the RING. Get a mono (2 conductor) 2.5mm and jumper from the SLEEVE-SLEEVE and RING-TIP and it will work just fine.

Don't forget that these radios are synthesized only in the sense that you can program the frequency in to them. They still require a full bench alignment with the proper test equipment and the proper procedure after reprogramming to get maximum efficiency and performance out of them.

Never tried to use one on the 440 band, but if you were to put it in the high end of the band, I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

The first-gen units used EFJohnson RF boards, and with the second generation Pyramid began making their own RF boards. Pyramid support is excellent, so give them a ring and see if they have the manual for the older units and have them send you the appropriate one.

Just buy a Vertex VPL1 programming cable and plug it in the jack that is behind the front cover.

Could you pleas clarify what you mean here? I have an after market /\/\ RIB which I am sure works. I have made a cable as described on this site using a DB25 on one end and a 2.5mm mono connector on the other. I have double checked all of the connector, but I still get the same error as the OP, on the Windows or DOS programming software. Can you offer any insight as to why? Thanks!

Are you pluging it into the jack thats behind the faceplate or the jack on the back of the SVR Extender?

I am plugging it into the 2.5mm Jack behind the faceplate and the opt light comes on as it should. I think the problem may be the crappy connectors I bought from RS. Can someone who has made a cable please confim that the pinout on this site is correct?? Thanks!

The pinout is correct. The homemade cable I have works great. I use the windows-based version of the programming software.

I have a SVR200U that I am trying to get to play nice with an Orion (programming issue on the radio end), but when I try and program the repeater with their windows software it errors out. When do it in DOS, it works just fine.

If the DOS version gives you an error, I'd venture to say you have a picky repeater.

Sorry for not checking back more often. In my previous post I mentioned that you could program the SVR with a Moto RIB. The particular clone RIB I'm using has a 2.5mm plug but it is 3 conductor (stereo type) and the programming signal is on the RING. 3 conductor plug connections are referred to as TIP, RING, SLEEVE. This cable will NOT work directly with the SVR. I built an adapter with a 3 cond female and a 2 cond male. Wire: sleeve-sleeve, 3conductor ring-to-tip of 2 conductor. This works for me.

I used the DOS software successfully the first time. I moved the freq a long way and did touch up the rx coils.

good luck

These units are touchy about their programming timing. Try a different computer.

Make sure your comport is 9600,n,8,1. If you are using the DOS software, are you running it in DOS? Not a DOS window?

DOS means DOS, so anything from Win98 or earlier. Win98 can be booted into DOS from startup.
