OK Radio pros, What is this Programmer for?

Well, here is a strange one
for me....This is some kind of
SEA Programmer...Perhaps for Marine
Radios. Model is a PIU 700

Any help appreciated. What Radios its used
for, value, ect

I am sure this 220 Mhz Commerical radio
made the Hams super happy....I wondered what
Commerial Company may have paid off the FCC to grab those freqs....

OH well, another programmer to collect dust.

Its a programming box for SEA 220 MHz radios. There are alot of 220Mhz commercial systems out there. Many have gone offline though. The SEA radios are made by securicor and operate in AM mode doing MPT1327 trunking (or a very close format) One bigger SMR comany using this format is SMR USA. I know a dude that has alot of 220 Mhz channels for sale

Ah something that I might be able to help with, the 22o radios in questions are ACSB radios, which is Amplitude Compadered Side Band, and the company that originally used them was United Parcel Service (the big brown truck) and if my feeble mind serves me well UPS bought SEA in the 80's since they were going to spend 1 billion on a system anyway. The other company that made ACSB 220 radios was Aerotron.

The company which was "behind" the removal of 220-222 mHz from amateur service was UPS. UPS envisioned a national telemetry system for supervision and tracking of packages, but later decided to go to another spectrum area; I think it was 800 mHz or thereabouts, but they did not use 220 as originally planned. The 220-222 spectrum was lost to the amateurs for good, but the FCC granted 219-220 to hams for digital and packet work. The remaining 222-225 ham spectrum is still a LOT of space.
