how good are mt-1000's

was thinking about picking up one of these in UHF for a scanner and frs radio

Hi:

Providing you can get a good MT1000 that
has not seen 24 hr a day, 7 days a week
service, they are probably one of the Best
Motorola radios ever made. Not withstanding
the reliablility, the performance of the MT1000 is one of the truly last commerical radios ever made.

( Sadly Motorola no longer supports them, but
who cares, they were designed to last 20 years anyway. )

Excellent Audio from a good Speaker...Not like some that are about the size of a Nickle, and covers all the DPl / PL Codes, and will Do MDC with the proper front cover.

MT1000's has many configuratios from 2 ch, 8ch, 16ch, and if you can aford a few bucks
more, you can find them with 99 channels.

Only real draw back was that they could
only Scan 8 channels, however the performace
of the radio sometimes is desired over functions.

With a light duty battery, they too can be
comproble to others.

Lots od acc'y availible for them.

I personally use the 99ch MT1000 for all my
commerical applications.

Also very durable radios -- my fire service has used them for years, and I've seen them take an incredible amount of abuse and keep on ticking. My only complaint is that they weigh a ton; make sure you're wearing a belt or you'll lose your pants

I hope you are just scanning the frs freqs.
The mt1000 is a great radio but it is not a legal frs unit to transmit with. (even with
the power turned down) Check the frs rules.

yeah i could have gotten one with rapid charger and dtmf for 150.00

had to have a tooth pulled so cant afford it now.

also how hard is it to use the dtmf to make phone calls? Ive always thought about getting a ham repaeter freq and set it up to make phone calls on the radio. was wondering if its hard to do let alone expensive?

Personaly I think the mt-1000 is the best radio Motorola ever built,I work as a firefighter, a police officer and an industrial electrician and use my radio for all three jobs and it has withstood the rigors of these jobs without missing a beat. I have had my radio (a 99ch vhf high band) for about 3 years and it stays on almost 24-7 I just keep switching batterys and I haven't had a bit of trouble out of it.
Also my batterys will last at least 24hr, which is more than I can say for the rest of my radios. Its a shame they have quit making such rugged high quality reliable radios. I think I'll just find me anouther new mt1000 and stick it in the closet so I will have a replacement when mine finaly dies, I cant see buying anything else.

That's one hell of an (illegal) FRS radio. An MT1000 is great, but a horrible choice for a scanner in my opinion. I think you're looking at the wrong radio for this application but that's just my opinion. Why not buy, say, a scanner?

Although illegal, this would be enforced as strong as the 11 meter band activity is- not at all.

The MT1000 is a great radio. It's no heavier than a saber and just as durable. Depending on the DTMF front cover and how it's programmed, all you have to do is key the mic and press the buttons. The only downfall of the MT1000 is that it will only scan 8 channels... 9 if you have the priority set to follow the TX channel. Mine has gone through a windshield, fallen 55 feet onto pavement, and loks and works almost as well as it did on the day I got it. The ONLY reason I abandoned mine is because I like the signalling and alpha display on my MT2000.

Also, the MURS frequencies are pretty quiet now too, considering company's aren't diving on them like with the FRS channels.
