Something odd with my GP300 (not bad)

After my GP350 quit on me, I had to revert to my trusty GP300 for back-up. The easiest way to program the codeplug from one to the other was simply to make the GP300 think it was a GP350 by programming the 350 codeplug into it, and it worked just fine. I also took the DTMF pad out of the GP350 and put it in the GP300 as well (I had always had the keypad on the GP300, however never any electronics!). Anyway, I had P1 programmed for monitor, and P2 programmed for "exit phone". To my surprise, when on the GP300, P2 turns the scan function on and off even when I am not in the scan mode position. Can anyone explain to me why this is- and whether or not I can program the radio for 16 conventional channels yet still use the P2 button to turn the scan on and off?!?

This really is something odd!

I read the radio into my computer, and saw in the radio wide settings that the P2 button was still set for "exit phone", but when trying to see what other functions it could do, I got messages saying that this feature was not supported on this radio.

Hi Josh-

Thats interesting what happened with your keys. I'm just curious how you got your GP350 codeplug to work in the GP300 - did you just clone it normally?

I altered the software through hex-editing. Its original purpose was to program a 16 channel radio's codeplug into a two channel radio- in order to make the 2 channel radio into a 16 channel radio with scan, and signalling. It worked quite nicely!

How did you alter a 350 plug to load into a 300?
What year was your 300 manufactured in?
If this can be duplicated there are a lot of old 300's to be revived..

Somewhere on the GP300 Batlabs page, it says that there is a certain hex digit that you can alter to allow the radio to accept any codeplug. My early 1994 GP300 (a radio converted to 16 from 8 channels) was simply programmed with the GP350 codeplug. Channel 16 was already my scan position and suppose maybe it reverts to channel 16 when you push the P2 button, but I haven't gone to test it any further. Maybe (like the select 5 GP300) the P2 button is the scan button somehow.
