Small town EMA vehicle, (pictures)

Hi all,

I thought I'd share some pictures of a small California city EMA vehicle, the radios are as follows.

MA/COM Orion, 35-50, 110watts, turned down to 90
MA/COM Orion, 150-175, 110watts, turned down to 90
MA/COM Orion, 440-470, 100watts, turned down to 75 dual banded with
MA/COM Orion, 470-512, 45 watts, turned to 35, these two are on the top Orions system head.
Motorola Spectra, 800, Smartnet, with DES/XL

All Orions are Aegis capable.

Unitrol Omega 8000 (pre Federal days)
Corner Strobes, Headlight wigwags, LED's in back deck, LED's in front.

440-470 & VHF radios are dual banded on the left side antenna, the roof antenna is Maxrad MLPD450 and the Comtelco Low Band, & Maxrad MLPV800
All mounts are Comtelco Micro-Loss

Let me be the first to publicly say that's one SCHWEET install! A job well done.

I just may consider keeping my Lumina if I could get it to look like that. Thanks for the ideas Stan.

Looks great Stan. I'm in the planning and preperation stages for a complete overhaul of my car....new strobe cables...custom console(which is waiting for one thing to be finished) and a new trunk deck set-up. Pictures and such will be posted late march/early april.

Stan, is that the same one I saw or this a different one? The antenna's look different from what you showed me.

Small town EMA with all those radio's.
Our small town took 4 city council meetings to decide if they could afford a $150 used VHF handheld for the VFD. Finally approved it but no a majority by a long shot.

The console is the Troy CC06 and probably the best made, it is over 14 yrs old and still looks great.

Also I have a 2003 Crown Vic P71 with all MACOM Jaguar mobiles which look the same 5 total 2 dual banded and the CV is much easier to install.

hell i had a lumina easy to work on. i liek that Electrical Drop under the glove box

Are those all comtelco's

I hated Luminas..The battery was buried under the windshiled washer fluid tank. Drilling the firewall hole was a pain. The roof is mostly double metal so antenna's and lightbar cables were a hassle..

But on the other side. I have seen cars that I built in 96-97 coming back in to be stripped out with well over 100k on the clock.

I had a '98 LTZ, and while it was a little time consuming, I didn't think it was hard. I had 2 100w Syntor X's with Systems 90*s controls, a SignalMaster and an SW400SS for the headlight/taillight flashers and deck/dash lighting.

I had to laugh looking at the pic's, because I put my VHF Hi antenna on the left fender like Stan's car....I bet it is lined up with the AM/FM antenna, right?

Mine was....made a clean install. My UHF antenna was placed in the center of the decklid, tho.

Great looking install. I put amber back up lights in, though...made a neat effect being red/amber with the taillight flasher.

What's the box under the plywood on the left side? Antenna combiner?

The antenna's were the easiest part of the install, and yes it lines up LOL.
The box is a antenna splitter, MAXRAD, works quite well.
The hardest part of the install was the hiding of the radio control cables, pitty they don't make a shorter one for stubby cars, my crown vic was much easier.

Also there is 1 4 ga. power wire and 4 ga. ground both thru fused circuits in the trunk, in the engine compartments there are circuit breakers to protect those 2 wires also.
There is 8 ga. set feeding the lighting systems, also completly fused on each side.

The wires run thru the firewall thru a high temp conduit to keep the wires away from the 3800 engine, (tried to shoot a picture of it but to dark and tight).

This vehicle will be replaced later this year with a Tahoe.

Very nicely done, the Orion's look great! Nifty idea using dual control with 2 UHF Orions to cover the entire band.

mine had 150k when i sold it and it ran like the day picked it up from the dealer in 97.

I am pissed the kid i sold it to Already Blew the Motor Tranny and Crashed up the Front End.

if i knew he was going to do that i would have not sold it to him

Kit, ya have to let it go. Once you sell it, it's not your problem. Heck with him - you got your money's worth from the car, then you got your money from the kid. He has neither now. His stupidity. It's what kids do to cars anyway.

My father sold a bike to a kid and the kid promptly laid it down and lost a leg. Different deal I know, but the kid was stupider than my father knew and to this day, Dad feels guilty about it (he knew the kid's parents and all). Even the parents don't blame him - the kid was a friggin idiot. What can you do?

A buddy of mine has told me I should look into a used Lumina. From what I read on here, it sounds like he's right. Money is always tight here, and the clock on the Mazda is up to 262,000 and counting. The time is drawing near I fear. Any further comments on the Lumina? I'll just be looking for basic reasonable transportation. And being able to put the radios in easily will be a definite plus.

The Lumina in the pictures will ba avail. about June if someone wants it, it is the police package, and has just over 50,000 mile, most of which are highway, never been in police servie. I would think they will take 7000.00 with the mount for the console and maybe some of the stuff.

Stan, have you been able to get the loband Orion up to the six meter band. I have tried with the Orion DOS but had no luck.

Metro121... the Control + E trick does not work??? Or VCO just wont spread up there???

Good question...will any Orion work on ham freqs, and if so what software is needed (DOS or Windoze) ??? We have the Orion at work, and for being an Ericsson I like it.

Sorry for the delay on answers, I spent yesterday on a plane flying back from DC.

The radio's in this vehicle are not intended to go into the Ham bands, and as far as I know only with the DOS software the Control-E worked. I can't answer that one as I have only used the windows software.
