Also search the Yahoo Scanner "webring" for NYPD scanner! or maybe someone from NYC has the link..

Try http://www.firehouse.com. They've got a whole section devoted to September 11th. There are about 45 minutes of radio trnasmissions there from NYPD and FDNY. Plus pictures stories and more.
This will get you right there

I cant really explain what it sounds like, but I heard it while I was listening to the scanner broadcasts at the link i provided....it sounded like data being transmittted or some type of Major emergency notification...then I was watching the news, And I could hear it in the background at ground zero....kinda like "Weeeee---ooooooo weeeee------oooooo over and over again in between voice transmissions. andybody know what that was? I listened to the live scanner at http://www.live365.com and search for police scanner or something like that...its under the live radio genre...wait...I was listening to it live, so maybe its not there anymore but I have heard the recordings at that newsday site and the other link....holla back at me about those funny tones I heard.

Right you are radio-south! Just think how many agencies were there with radios. FD, PD, EMS, Electric Co. Gas Co. Harbor patrol: (which if I recall works ch.9 VHF Marine band! with coast-guard)NY State PD, Where is Middletown, I heard a patrol car leaving/entering the area. Subway, Plus the towers had several Federal agencies: fbi/ss/cia/faa...ect..How many did I leave out? someone had a website with a list of radio operators...it had close to 60 agencies or so. I take my hat off to those who did there jobs on the air! god bless them....
Just the Middletown patrol car ID, Its not sometimes common for Rockland county & (any county) have to appear in court, pickup/dropoff a prisoner..it was on your http://www.firehouse.com site you posted! under .ram audio. State units were contacting Albany.
back to work....
back to work....

I understand now....yes it was probably the personal alarms that were making audible noise so people knew where each other were because visibility was so poor. maybe it was being picked up by the radio's mic or something...i live in so. florida, and I have heard many different alert tones (alot of stuff goes on here in the diry south) but never anything like I heard with those tones. Is that what it was?...a audible alert so firefghters could find each other in the smog by walking toward a sound to stay together? Holler at me if I'm kinda getting what you are saying...im thirsty for knowledge, and another miller lite. peace

I've played the tapes from Newsday several times and apparently someone was taping a scanner in the scan mode- a conglomeration of
radio transmissions from FDNY- Manhattan and
Citywide, NYPD- SOD, Port Authority PD.
403 police and fire personnel lost from these (3) agencies- absolutely sickening !
Newsday had more audio clips earlier on but
apparently filtered some of the content which had sounded like possibly the last transmissions made by some of these members.

For My 2 Cents: Those personal alarms are
called PASS (Personal Alarm Safety System).
Typically after they're turned on- after 30
sec. of sensing no motion they send a pre-alert beep, after a few seconds of still no
detectable motion they go into alert mode
and emit the sound you had referred to. They can also be manually activated by the wearer to indicate man down. PASS come either as an individual unit or integral to the self contained breathing apparatus.

I see....Pretty good idea...so how was I hearing this alarm over the radio every time someone de-keyed after talking? it seemed like the repeater would stay in hang time everytime a PTT was released and broadcast this alarm tone. dos it interface with the radio or something? forgive me for my ignorance on the subject, i'm completely into radios, but upon hearing what I heard and monitoring this, experience tells me that this is somehow integrated into the radio system to be implemented in extreme em,ergency cases only. I'm still kinda totally lost on this but whatever, I was just curious because I have never heard (or seen for that matter) anything like this ever in my life.

Jaymz & Ed,
If you're referring to the audio in the 1st WAV file where Middletown is mentioned it's Middletown NJ. The beginning was cut off but you hear 'Middletown PD SPEN-1'. SPEN-1 is the
statewide police emergency network in NJ which is monitored by every NJ police agency that I'm aware of and the common hail to call another agency would be this format: 'Newark PD/Middletown PD/SPEN-1'
There are 4 SPEN channels used for different purposes and SPEN-1 is the calling channel.

//y 2 Cents:
Negative. The PASS unit has nothing to do with radios. It is like the size of a numeric pager and is worn on a firefighters belt. It emits alarms both visually (flashing lights) and audibly (fluctuating alarm) when there has been no movement on the person in over 30 seconds, when they are in prone position (laying down), or when the ºF gets over a certain temperature. It is used in case of a FF going down... others will know where he is. Nothing to do with radios

If it is the firefighters alarms that you are reffering to, they are called "PASS" alarms, and are an integrated part of the breathing apparatus the FF's wear. (PASS = Personal acountability Safety System?)
Basically, the have a mecury switch in them to detect motion. If a FF is motionless for 30 seconds, a quick warning "pre-alert" tone is heard. This reminds the FF to move a little to prevent the alarm going into full alarm. If, after 45 seconds, still no movement, the alarm will sound with the tone your are referring to.
They are used as distress alarms to alert other FFs that help is needed. Sadly, you hear way to many of these on ground zero that day, as many FFs were trapped and unable to move.
Sorry this is a little off the radio topic, but wanted to let ya know what a PASS alarm is and is for.

Who makes these "PASS" units.? Never noticed one? I'm gonna have to stop by FD & check it out?

That's kinda unfortunate that I had to stuble onthis discovery in that manner....God bless all those who passed that day. Does anyboday know if motorola man down tilt switch has the capability do do this in some effects by when it goes off opening the mic automatically for them or clearing a channel automatically for emergency traffic on a trunked system...if not motorola should do something like that....that would be REAL innovation in the radio maket for public saftey, not some system that is digital an works half ass. Just a thought.
Hi,
as far as those recordings they are 9 parts which make up the entire set of what that person had. They were not edited originaly (may have been done later) you were able to hear people communicating with names at some points..... The reason they sound like they were edited was because they were a mix of several agencies (as said eariler by someone) Having had a chance to listen to some of the fire xmissions live..... there were some things on those recordings that get cut out by other traffic not editing.
