I have MTS2000's Flashed for H35 operation. I have jump through all the hoops Moto requires in order to buy their software. I have both legal copies of their software & smartrib with a genuine moto cable. Would i be out of my mind in calling Moto and asking to purchase Flash upgrade software? Will the MotoMAN come and snatch me up? Once again I am a hobbyst interested in cool stuff with cool features. Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks!

I'm not sure how it works for end users. I know we have to go through our regional Motorola rep to obtain FlashPort upgrades for our customer's radios.

From what I've heard, they are not big on Flashing radios if they were not purchased new from them or an authorized Motorola dealer. Are the radios originally yours? You are probably better off going through a rep rather than calling Motorola direct, others here may be able to advise you better. It may also depend on what features you want & your reasons for "needing" them.

As far as the FlashPort goes, you will receive a hardware key which will go in-between the RIB and programming cable. It will determine how many radios you can Flash. You will also receive 2 floppy disks, one contains info for the SmartRIB, the other contains info for the radios. The instructions that come in the kit are fairly clear & easy to follow. Good Luck.

Todd

Cooler features? Well, since you have the H35 option, which I believe gives you conventional only operation, just about anything would be cool. MDC1200 can be fun, although quickly becomes boring/irritating. Making them secure capable would be great, but you'd require a secure board in each, as well as the Flashing, AND start hunting around for a keyloader. You'd probably learn the most from getting some sort of trunking options added, preferably SmartZone, as you would then be able to set up both SmartNet & SmartZone systems. Of course, then there's the matter of obtaining a System Key for your testing. Also it isn't nearly as cool without a system for them to work on. Sounds like a lot of hassle, and Flashing isn't cheap. You may be better off trading-in & paying the difference for some radios with the features you're looking for. The keyloader & System Key would still be issues though. Once you get what you're looking for, send me a PM & I might be able to help you out with some things.

If you want to know what options are available in the flashport system, go to the interactive flash decoder here at Batlabs and type in a flashcode of FFFFFF-FFFFFF-F and you'll get the full list of every known option. Then look at the flashcode decoder ring and before long you'll know what your preferred flashcode will be.

Oh...be realistic about the features you want to put in. I don't think ANY of them are free, either. Quite sure of it, actually.

You'll have to contact the local M sales rep for your state or local agency in order to order a flash upgrade. You can't get them via any other means except for the "black market" or "basement" flashers who are very hard to get in touch with.

And, in order to NOT raise suspicions, don't tell the sales rep what flashcode you need, just tell him what features you have and what features you want. Let them figure it out. Besides, the last digit in the flashcode is the check digit, and there is no known way to calculate what it should be for any given flashcode, not that I've heard about, anyway.

Hello wavetar & elroy, thank you both for your input.

wavetar, i have two mts's already equipped with encryption (DVI-XL) and i have the KVL, i bought these off of ebay. The other two i bought directly from motorola. encryption is cool, however audio quality suffers quite a bit. as far as mdc1200, i better get to batlabs and read up on it (i have no idea what it is).

elroy, unfortunately i don't have any connections with any M reps in my area, the last dealing i had with a rep turned into a hassle. I needed a radio serviced, the rep came by to pick it up. i caleed him 2 weeks after he picked it up, just to get an idea of what is going on. he acted like he didn't even remember dealing with me. With paperwork in hand i called moto and after being juggled around for and hour or so i found out that the radio had been looked at, however, they did not receive any approval to perform the repairs. Once i got everything straightened out i had the radio back in a week. since then i have a sour taste in my mouth. there are some ma & pa shops around that do programming and some servicing, but i haven't spent much time talking to these guys. For a serious repair or a question they can't answer, they'll refer me to the rep i've already delt with.

Thank you both for your input, i will look over the features and figure out which one(s) i gotta have...

Justin
