Can a Vhf Saber 1 be upgraded to a Saber 3 by adding a display board and a new housing ?

Yes, it sure can, just add the display , create a new code plug with the proper bandsplit and program that baby up!!

I have done this several time with no problem, just keep in mind a Systems saber front sheild will not work on a conventional saber . Just thought I'd pass that part about the Systems saber on to you to save you some headaches.

What whould be the proper part number for the display board ? My Saber 1 has DES so I guess that I would need the longer board to cover the DES mod.

Thanks

Would the same concept hold true for the MX1000 - 3000?

It is the same process, however a Saber series front sheild will not work on an MX3000 radio, the firmware is different.

Not Disagreeing with you 10-95
But Have swapped front display panels from a saber 3 to a MX3000, It was the only way to reprogramme it after it was programmed incorectly with saber rss and it worked for me.

You probabley did not have a real MX, maybe a saber in an MX casE The mx has an internationl core, Core 5I. Try reading or writing to an MX with the saber rss, it won't do it, it will tell you it has a non standard core. Don't do it, don't try swapping an mx panel with a saber panel, trust me VCARUSSO, it won't work.

I had to edit my post I think I misunderstood what you said, Take an MX an d try to read or write to it with saber rss and you will see axactly what I'm talking about , or try writing to and MX with standard saber rss, I will bet money the operation will fail. MX CORE 5I, USA CORES :5C 4C 5D 6D 8D
I would also be interested in the version of RSS you used for saber and for MX. I know for a fact you will never get past the core read with the usa saber rss.

I do HAve a MX radio and yes It is 5i Core,

What I was saying I actully removed my Saber front pannel ( display Unit ) and put in my MX radio and programmed it with MX software and it worked ( deleted the corupped saber code plug ) that was in it display ROM, then Put the display unit back in the saber and reprogrammed it with saber rss and it was OK

I think you also need an 8K kit to increase the channel # to 120. See the Saber specific section in batlabs.
