I just bought an Antenna Specialist's VHF stubby for work. It's on an HT1000. The size is a lot easier to deal with -- I'm used to UHF. So far, reception is very good, but it's only been used on major dispatch channels. Are they as good as the longer ones (153 MHZ range)? Are there things I should look out for? Thanks in advance.

BTW, this has been a great resource!

G.

The shorty should be less efficient than the longer duck, you might want to go into the fringe areas of reception and switch the antenna's to check on reception, both Tx and Rx. I know what you mean- those Jedi VHF antenna's are ridiculous, I got the place I work to buy Visar VHF antenna's which have the same connector. They had me spend a day field testing the Visar antenna and getting
signal strength #'s from the dispatcher in a variety of locations. Bottom line- Rx was comparable and Tx was a bit less but found acceptable. Then we tried VHF public safety speaker mic. which looks like it had a Visar antenna as it comes- this setup worked better than the original antennna on the radio. Hope this helps.

Tx/Rx on the fringes is a little weaker, but worth the trade off of the smaller antenna --
I'll just crank up the volume on the mobile

Thanks for the information - it's much appreciated.
