ok I am interested in setting up simple phone patch and wanted some advise.
I have searched the web for the unit itself to liitle availe. I want one that would hook to the base radio and use DTMF for dialing it
I am looking for the simplex unit.
can annyone turn me on to a manufacter that makes what I am looking for?
I see that it can be an option in a repeater but I only might need short range access.(in town)
I have seen a few on the web but as far as describing any operations, nada.
what cost am I looking at?
Is it overly complicated to put together?
anything I should look for , pros and cons?
is there a particular radio that would be good for this application?
and on another note I am looking into fire pagers AKA keynote or minitors that could be used strictly to monitor a freq. I want to use PL but not the tones. I have seen some set ups , but I know NOTHING about the pager themselves. I saw an ad in a trade magazine for this and with a lower coat than a HT it makes sense for our business to be able to hear when not in the truck. anyone who is able to educate me or has a setup like I am looking for please email me directly.
thanks
"phone patch"?

YOu may look at http://www.connectsystems.com
They make a feature-packed simplex and duplex phone patch that you connect to your radio. I have not done it but I plan to do it soon, as you would see from my post in the lounge about 2 hours before I read this here.
Anyway it costs about $350. They sell it at ham radio outlet amongst other places.
I'm also not sure if the simplex autopatch actually requires the use of 2 frequencies or not. These devices will also make a repeater out of 2 mobiles.
My question pertains to the DTMF. I have lots of radios. Only 2 of them have keypads. IS there some cheap pocket dialer type thing that would work to send the commands?

There are two types of Phone Patches
1. VOX patch...this means that once connected, the tranmitter is keyed via VOX levels on the phone...this works great when calling quiet enviroments i.e. houses, offices but can be annoying when used to call loud places i.e. bars, restaurants....this is because in a loud environment, the VOX will not allow the radio to be unkeyed (this means you will never be able to talk) there are 2 ways around this problem
2. Sampling Patch... what this patch does when connected, keys the radio for a set period, and all phone audio is transmitted, then unkeys for a set period, during which, the radio-user can transmit..while the radio user is transmitting, all Tx audio is transferrred to the phone line and the "Sample" is turned off..when the radio user stops transmitting, the patch goes back into "Sample Mode"...this type of operation allows the radio user to retain control of the devicece when speaking to loud environments
Notes: The "sample windows" will have to be set to allow for a reasonably seamless conversation..this will be trial and error and may take some time
Some PLL radios will not accept a very fast sample rate due to the fact that the VCO cannot change from TX to RX fast enough
3. Duplex patch...using separate TX and RX frequencies, this patch style is best used with a VOX patch with the VOX setting set to Minimum (always keys the transmitter)..since you have a separate RX frequency, you will always be able to talk to the landline party...the only downside to this type of setup is the need for 2 frequencies, 2 radios and a duplexer (if using one antenna)
CSI, Zetron and Motorola make phone patches, I've used the CSI (Connect Systems) patch with great success (mainly VOX setup), the unit is easy to install and configure (the newer models allow for paging and remote dial-up control) never used the Zetron or the Motorola
Hope this helps....Z
