Radio Consoles for Fire Trucks

Post by fire-medic8104 »

Who is the best supplier of mounting systems for fire trucks?

I am looking to find something that I can stack 4 units (800,vhf, siren, and switch box). I'm not sure on the fire trucks what I can do since they are not delivered yet.

But we have a '80 International commercial truck that was converted to a tanker, a '87 Ford commercial truck that was converted to a tanker, and a '79 Chevy 3500 4x4. I need to find a way to secure the equipment, because the on/under the dash mounting just doesn't cut it. I'm tired of having to lean across the truck to change the channel on the radio or change siren tones.

The major problem I have is the Chevy is 4 wheel drive with the shifter on the floor. The International and the Ford both are a few feet from the floor so a small console on the floor wouldn't work, you would still have to lean down to operate the equipment.

We are not a big enough department so alot of times the driver is the only one in the vehicle, so he must do the operation of the equipment also, while other people respond direct to the scene. So, putting it on the passenger's side is out of the question.

I do install, but most of the fire trucks we see have the mounts in the ceiling already (which I don't think would support 4 units) or they go in cut outs on the passenger side.

Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions or companies that provide mounts for the above vehicles.

Thanks.

Also, the two fire trucks we have coming in already had mounts setup close to the driver so it should not be a problem.

gamber-johnson makes what you need.

Look at their line of tall pole assemblies and bases normally used for laptops. You can mounted their stackmaster brackets system on these for use in Big Rigs where you need the extra height.

Get their sollutions manual - its free.

Best place to order is sirennet.com via their 1-800 number and ask for Rich to special order.

pricing is excellent.

what about stacking them on a Gamber-Johnson Pole mount to the floor. it should make it about seat hight and you can ajust it on an angle to the drivers side. Ive seen that in a few pick ups with bench seats

Thanks for the info. I kinda glanced at the gamber-johnson stuff but I'll look a little harder at them.

The only thing I was wondering was did the pole mounts shake very much?

If you use a pole mount, attach a wrench to the console with a piece of wire so the wrench is always close by to tighten the pole mount on a weekly basis when it rattles loose in a truck.

Yea, basicly. Unless the pole has the footprint of two or three small ones, it is going to shake. There really isn't anyway around that. It's the nature of a single pole mount.
