TrunkTracker and Spectra on same antenna?

Post by davkenrem »

I have a Motorola Spectra programmed to follow my cities TRS and and just purchased a BC780XLT. The Spectra already has an 800mhz antenna attached, I was wondering if I could use a splitter and use a multiband antenna for both radios? The Spectra does affiliate, so Do I need some type of filter to block the RF from going directly into the 780? Do I need a duplexer.
I have two NMO locations on the car and I'm trying to save the second for a UHF two-radio, and avoid adding more antennas to the car.
Thanks in advance

An 800 antenna (assuming it's a gain model and not a quarter wave) makes a pretty decent all-band scanner antenna. However, the fact that your Spectra must transmit throws a wrench in the works. There is no practical way for your scanner to share an antenna with the 800 Spectra, if the Spectra must xmit. You'd have to go inside the Spectrta and rig up a splitter on the receive side of the antenna switch and route one side of the splitter to the scanner - I'm sure it's possible but you'd have to drill a hole in your Spectra (yuk) and it seems like too much work. This would also degrade the receive sensitivity of the Spectra by about 3 dB and the scanner would be deaf whenever the Spectra was transmitting. A better approach might be to install a dedicated antenna for the scanner on one of your NMO mounts, and a Sti-co dual band, cellular look-alike antenna on the other NMO mount. The Sti-co dual band antennas are offered in several versions, including one which covers both UHF and 800, their model # ROOF-DB-UHF/CELL. It comes with a cross band coupler, which would allow your UHF and 800 transcievers to share that one antenna for both transmit and receive (including simultaneous xmit on both radios if necessary), while your scanner maintains full frequency agility on its own antenna. Sti-co Industries can be found at http://www.sti-co.com.
