I am going to be installing David Clarks on a Maratrac. In everyone's experience, which is the best way to interface the main unit ot the radio. DC sells an interface for the Maratrac, but is it really necessary?

To interface the David Clark headset system to the Maratrac and other radios it is best to use the DC interface. It has some circuitry in it for isolation and level shifting. You can use a simple audio transformer from RadShack to isolate the speaker because you can NOT ground either side of the speaker. Also the mic line needs to be isolated or you get the alternator whine and other electrical noises from the vehicle in the transmitt audio. I have interfaced lots of headsets, repeaters, extenders and links, but it requires an engineering knowlge and strong two-way radio background to do it right.
You can get the roadmaps (schematics) for the DC interfaces and you could make one from that.
