apx7000 antenna question

We are using our apx7000's for both uhf (474.) and on 800 but no GPS. we have the pmas4000 uhf/700/800 mhz antenna. several of the antennas have broken over time (caught in seat belts etc.). some of the users have put their old HT1000 uhf SMA black thread stubby antennas on. the radio transmits and receives good on the uhf and the rss meter shows very little change when the stubby antenna is used.

radio shop people tell us not to use the uhf only antenna as it will damage the radio. is this a fact or fiction?
