Converting GM300 LTR Radios to Conventional

Post by KE7JFF »

I'm assisting a friend of mine who has acquired several GM300 UHF radios that have the Scholer Johnson LTR Firmware in them. We've made some clones of a conventional firmware EPROM and ready to convert them. Now, I am familiar with doing this with Maxtracs, but with GM300s, I'm not so so sure. Is there anything special that needs to be done to make this work with GM300s? I know you need to use the bit banger in MaxLab to "blank" the radio and initialize.

That should be all you need to do. The bit banging is covered in this thread below, in case you hadn't seen it:

So I decided to try doing one conversion; I have all the right parts and everything ready to go. I first removed the old SJ PROM from the radio, then put in the conventional one. However, here is where end up not getting anywhere. Tried to first confirm the radio can be read by Maxlab by doing the old radio comm test under the setup menu and it does not talk with the radio. I thought it this was odd so I switched out the PROM back to the SJ one and of course it doesn't even want to talk to the radio either. Is there something goofy with the previous SJ LTR conversion that I need to undo here?
