Taxie cabs in New York City gobling up old wide band UHF rad

Am I missing something here on the FCC requirements about narrow banding? Was talking with one of the surplus radio resellers yesterday and he informed me that the New York City cabs were his best customer to grab up the older wide band UHF radios.

The only exception I know of to the narrow banding was those users in the UHF T band segment.

My thought here is that we are seeing these cab companies trying to save a buck until they get caught, still running wide band radios. Guess they are rolling the dice that the FCC won't pay them a call.

Wouldn't take but a few visits and they too will find out why all the public safety agencies have spent all those hard earned public tax dollars in up grading their radio systems.

Maybe there is some back room deals that the rest of the radio community is not aware of that the cab companies have made with the FCC.

We will wait with interest on the next chapter to the soap opera on this on.

My thoughts are the official company dispatch went to narrow band, however these radios will probably be used on a freq the drivers can all use to talk to each other like a FRS freq, or 464.550, or something similar. If you ever saw a NYC taxi driver, you'd realize they could care less. GARY

Many NYC taxi companies operate on a very thin line and a lot of the companies 'rent' the cab on a daily basis to a driver many of which provide their own radios. Most of the cops have more pressing issues but the Taxi and Limousine Commission have inspectors which enforce the rules down to the molecular level. They have a rule which requires any radios installed in the vehicles (even temporarily) must be approved by the commission. This allowed for widespread impound and ultimate destruction of their 10 meter radios they were using years back, guess it could happen again with the 25KHz radios if the TLC guys went after it again.

most yellow cars do not have 2-ways. it is the Livery or black cars that operate in the outer boros that use 2 ways for dispatching and they fall under different rules than the standard yellow car.

UHF? I thought lowband was the band of choice among NYC independent taxi companies.

I noticed this too. UHF SRA-series first generation Syntor mobiles going for $ 200+ on eBay, that sort of thing.
