Compatibility, IMBE/AMBE?

Post by Glenn »

I'm sure this has been addressed some where out there, but are these two vocoder formats(IMBE/AMBE) compatable? Specifically, I'm looking at the specs for the Kenwood TK-5280 P25 which states AMBE. I'm currently using an Astro Spectra on a P25(IMBE) phase 1 system. Would I encounter any issues with the Kenwood?

1: All APCO-25 Phase 1 is IMBE. It's part of the spec.
2: An AMBE vocoder can decode IMBE and encode to IMBE.
3: The newer protocols (P25 Phase 2, Motorola F2, MotoTRBO) all use AMBE.

So a newer radio will have the AMBE vocoder, which will operate in IMBE mode for P25 Phase 1.
This is my opinion, not Aeroflex's.

I WILL NOT give you proprietary information. I make too much money to jeopardize my job.

I AM NOT the Service department: You want official info, manuals, service info, parts, calibration, etc., contact Aeroflex directly, please.
