RSS - cache on/off utility - is it permanent?

Post by g8tzl2004 »

With older RSS which is not Pentium compatibile, it is sometimes necessary to switch off the cache in order to slow down the computer.

I have a Thinkpad 486 laptop which does not have the facility to disable the internal cache in BIOS. Instead I have to use a simple DOS utility called ICDICE.

All you need to do is run "ICD" to disable the cache and "ICE" to enable it.

I have a simple question - when you disable the cache, do you need to remember to enable it again OR is the cache automatically re-enabled when you reboot the laptop?

It probably differs among different computer models. It would be easy enough to test though, with a radio that requires the cache to be off...just make sure it's off, verify the radio can read/write, then reboot & try programming again without running the cache program.
No trees were harmed in the posting of this message...however an extraordinarily large number of electrons were horribly inconvenienced.

Welcome to the /\/\achine.

Only problem is that I might be able to read OK with the cache on but then I might corrupt the codeplug if I write to the radio with the cache still on??

I guess I will just run the cache off program each time I run the RSS !!! (if I remember)...but its only old custom RSS for "special" man down radios that require the cache to be off...pity my 286 screen backlight has blown!!

If there's a setting in the BIOS, that will usually survive across a reboot. If not, it probably resets itself to ON every time the machine is booted

If you're turning the cache off with a DOS program, you should put that at the end of your AUTOEXEC.BAT so it happens each time the machine boots up.

Thanks Bob.

There is no BIOS setting as I'm using an IBM 486 Thinkpad laptop rather than a desktop.

However, the ICDICE software seems to work OK and its free to download.

I just need to remember how to do the AUTOEXEC.BAT thing !!!
