Impala headlight disable question

Post by wisyntorx »

I have already made an Ignition bypass for my Impala from 5 wires, a high current DPDT switch and a 40 amp circuit breaker, and now I am working on a headlight disable. Has anyone tried this yet? I know that just about everything in this car sets a code in the computer if it is f@%$&d with, like if a high beam lamp goes out, so is there a way around this?

Silly me, I thought I could do the fuse trick, like I did with my '98 Lumina LTZ.....guess not.

Any Suggestions? If I come up with something I'll let ya'll know.

To disable the DRL on the Impala, you have two choices:
1. go to a GM dealer and try to coax them into disablling the DRL using the "DRB II" computer.

2. one relay gets added to switch off the OEM DRL relay. another relay opens the feedback line to the BCM and injects a 6.2v signal to the BCM whenever the DRLs are supposed to be on. this relay must disable whenever the highbeams or manually operated low beams are activated with the switch.

There it is! get a factory schematic beforef$%^*@# with it, or it could cost you alot of $$$$ if you smoke a BCM!

Don't ask about the '99 up Tahoe/Full size....you'd have to torture me before I tell!

Cavalier and several other GMs are simple too. jump the OEM DRL relay pemanently closed. I solder the contacts and fill the relay with epoxy. next.....pull the cluster......
you will find a pink wire (3rd from the end), open this lead and connect the cluster end to pin 30 of a Bosch relay.
Pin 87A goes to the output of a +5V regualtor that you add.
Pin 87 goes to the harness end of the pink wire you just cut.

Now install your wigwags as normal. Observe polarity and reverse if necessary.

I will soon be selling a "plug and play" wigwag harness for the 99 up GM trucks. Simple 3 wire hookup and two plugs. It works 100% with the BCM and gives no codes or dash lights.

Thanks for the info...I'm not worryed about disabling the DRL's to use a headlight flasher, I'm going to get one of the Impala-specific flashers and make the needed harness.

I haven't looked for a while, so before I sound dumb, is there a second relay for the auto headlights, or is it slaved with the DRL relay under the hood.

I really want to be able to turn off the lights like the 9C1/9C3 with the Surveillance Mode switch. I could care less if I have to wire it to use a relay output with my SmartSiren, but I want the head/taillight disable. I don't like having to turn the car off, setting the e-brake then starting it again.

Any thoughts here?

The auto headlights are controlled by the BCM by the same relay pair (DRL/headlight) relays thst operste the normaa lights.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I just couldn't see it in my head yesterday when I wrote the above.

Its 22 degress outside and I have an empty propane tank for my garage heater, so this project will wait :)

Thanks for the help.
