installing radios in center console

Post by firemanbatt »

Anyone had any luck installing in the center console of early 90's chevys with buckets? I want to take the top off, make a face plate out of aluminum, and mount my radios, switch panel, and scanner in there. The radios would be remote mount, so heat shouldn't be a problem...just looking for ideas and pictures....

What radios do you own?: APX / Astro 25 / Harris

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Save yourself some grief and just order Troy or Stewart Product faceplates. From what I remember of the suburban I had back in 95 the console was the same width as their products and would accept faceplates.

I've tried to make my own panels and unless you have the right tools they just look lousy. See my post on the custom stainless steel faceplate we had a shop do up for us. Now that was slick and looked OEM

The console in my 92 blazer was pretty wide so I dont see why you couldnt do it. The big problem I would see is the console is mounted back pretty far and the radio and controll are going to be under your armpit. It might be awkward trying to get to controls while driving and keeping your eyes on the road.
