If the system you're attempting to monitor isn't digital, then all it could be (except for a bizarre failure in the trunking data decoder system in the radio) would be invalid data.
Doublecheck: System ID, control channels, group ID's. Size code if on type 1 system.
Try to program a different system if there's one in the area you can receive.

If it's showing "Out of Range", then the three things it could be are improper System ID, improper control channels, or improper System type. Wrong Talkgroup, size code, individual ID, or connect tone, although it would not work, would not show "Out of Range". If it's an Astro only system, make sure you have "Astro Capable System" enabled in each personality, under the "F9 more options" screen, if memory serves.
If it all checks out, I did have one XTS3000 do exactly what you describe. It checked out perfectly in test mode & on conventional channels, but showed "Out of Range" in trunking mode. I knew the programming was correct, as the info was cloned into 96 other perfectly working units. If you do have to send it to Motorola, send a detailed note with it. I had to send mine in twice before they fixed it, even with the detailed note. Seems all they normally do is test mode & conventional tests as well, so don't be surprised if you get it back "No Fault Found" at least once.
