backlighting on maratrac w/a7 head

Customer complained that the backlighting did not work unless the horn/light function was enabled.Determined that the backlighting only came on when the first digit of the disply was lit(h/L or mode 10 and up).Radio has 35 modes so the zone/display function in radiowide parameters is off.Modes 1-9 are programmed as 001-009 but only show up as 1-9.tried spare head-same result.Any ideas?
