Public Safety Suggestions?

in keeping with another thread, does anyone have suggestions for a solid public safety radio? It will be used in law enforcement, on a VHF band. I already have an HT1000 which I love, and a GE/Ericsson MRK UHF which is great. Wondered what the general ideas were, and not even Motorola if you have another idea -- I'm looking to pick up another radio - would prefer more than 16 channels, but not necessary.

Nothing wrong with the HT1000. We just shipped 60 MTX8000's to the city of Tempe. (but there on 800Mhz) If 16ch. is all you need in VHF, HT1000, JT1000, (and a nice solid saber, makes a good weapon too!-old news)!

My all time favorites are the Saber/System saber series.I know of an officer who had a jump and runn foot chase at night and had his Saber fall off into a creek. The next day the guy who runs the pd radio shop went to the location and after looking in the murky creek water for a while he found it and pulled it out, still working!!

Hi, first off, the HT1000 is an excellent choice alone for a good public safety radio, however (and I think that Elroy would agree with me

I personally think that a saber would be the best choice. True, its big (but a smaller battery should take care of that problem) but its rock solid, and you don't have to worry about dropping it. Plus, you can get one for a fairly decent price off E-bay. So, again, I would think about the saber line of radios, and (if you have the extra $$) and astro saber as well. But, if you like your HT1000, I'd stick with that.

I've got a 16 channel GP-300 that is solid as a rock! I've dropped it I don't know how many times and it still works great. A friend of mine dropped his GP300 in a wilderness search and rescue operation. It was foud along a trail about a year latter, replaced the battery, cleaned it up, and it was like new.

I personnally like the HT1000 series radios also. BUT, if you need more channels, I would go with an MT2000 A4 model,which is a 48 channel radio with a 6 character top mounted LCD display. You can get an A7 model, which has I think 120 something or 200 something, but it has a full front mounted LCD display.

I have the MT2000 A4 model and it is great! It is as versatile as the ht100, same size, same battery, same look. Same model but more channels and more programming options.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll be looking into Sabers and an MT2000 A4 (which might save money when it comes to battery/charger, etc.

If you have any more suggestions, keep 'em coming!

Hi, I am also strongly for the MT2000 A4, I think you should go for it! (love the top display too, Motorola doesn't make that many radios with top displays (except the visar and mt1000 99ch). Plus what's good about the top display model is you dont have to take the radio off your belt, you can just look down at the display. That, plus more features and same durability as the ht1000, cant go wrong

If you are shopping around by price, get the GP300- they are durable and have enough features for most public safety agencies' systems. Small design, also.

If you want something that may need to double as a wheelchock for a truck, look into the MT1000 or Saber. These things are indestructable.

Also, check out the HT1000. I still see them floating around for $150 bucks for one like new. You can't go wrong with this choice.

I would say if 12.5 migration is not a factor for your department for a long time than go with an MT1000. You can get them with MDC1200 you just need to to know what you are looking for and if you need it for your system. Saber I II or III is nice too. if you want a newer product, than the MT2000 A4 would be nice. some people think the jedi series is smaller but the saber series is actually easier to carry because of the lower profile.
