I just picked up a Spectra A4 remote mount that has encryption. There is a black box with two keys on the front panel inline in the control cable.

Since I've never dealt with encryption before, I'm not sure what is box is for.
Could someone please enlighten me.

Thanks,
Pete

Hi,

The external box is an "External Securenet" box, and the encryption stuff is in it. You can sub a "normal" cable, but make sure you turn off "external securenet" in the radio's programming first! Incidentally, I've had trouble with some "aftermarket" RIBs not being able to talk to these external boxes properly - which causes big problems as the RSS won't let you read/write the radio unless it "finds" the Securenet box.

In most cases, you will find that these radios came from a government installation. Most of the ones I have seen had a HHC (hand held control) and a two radios system setup.

I have taken several of these radios and cut the control cable going from the SIU to the DES box. Then remade this cable to go to the radio. Let the radio and the SIU be close together.

Just remember that you MUST change the parameters of the radio RSS to remove the encription box. Otherwise you will end up with the serial code error showing up. If you have a version of the RSS that lets you into the MOFLAG section, it will be easy.

Go to crap shack and get the DB25 connector to mate with the radio. Your now on the way to operating without the DES box. You will need to have the wiring diagram to go between the SIU and the radio to make up the cable. If you don't have the HHC then follow the normal radio control cable wiring diagram.

Actually, since the radio is a D43KXA, I'm contemplating changing it back to a dash mount radio. What would I need to accomplish this...an interconnect board??
As I said, this is an A4 model Spectra.

thanks,
