I just installed a different handset/cable on the old style 3 watt "M" hard-wired cellular phone. The phone works, but it reads "LOANER" on the display of the new handset instead of showing the signal meter.

What needs to be done to make this new handset work properly? (I HOPE this is something from the keypad, as I no longer have the software for these things)

I'm not sure how to fix the problem, but I did just hear my friend the other day say the same thing happend when he switched the handset on his dads 3 watt bag phone.

If i remember correct, the "LOANER"-message tells that the used accesory (handset) is not 100% compatible. You must use the original one in order to fix the problem.

That explains it, then. The one that I installed does not have memory buttons, but otherwise works fine.

Yeah, that's one of the great things about the Motorola mobile cellulars. Just about ANY model handset can work on ANY model transceiver. It'll show "loaner" on the screen & you only have the basic dial & send, no extra features. Great for getting you out of a jam while waiting for the original handset to get fixed. I don't know of any other manufacturer that allows any mixing of handset models like that. OKI had a couple at one point, many years ago.

What model bag phone are you using? I have a couple collecting dust in the back-couldn't even donate them to the PD for the crossing guards. If it matches, I'll send one to you for shipping costs...

Uh, never mind. I took a look and all of them are probably the entry level model of the day-no memory buttons at all. Just the standard number pad plus send/end/power. I doubt they'd be much help. Sorry.
