I just purchased a 2004 Explorer XLT with factory supplied center console and am interested in mounting communication and emergency equipment. Someone told me that Troy, Jotto Desk, or some other manufacturer of public safety vehicle consoles makes a console that replaces the top front half of the factory supplied console. Since this car was purchased in a manner similar to a lease where it must be returned in three years, I want to minimize visible holes in the existing console. Does anyone have any experience/suggestions with regard to installations in this vehicle. I can use two Spectra A-7 front mounts (VHF & UHF) or an two trunk mount (A4 VHF/A9 UHF), or a combination. My goal is to mount a VHF and UHF radio or remote control head and perhaps a siren control head. I have a Sti-co dual band (150/450) disguise glass mount for this purpose.

They make a bolt on console no permanent mods needed.

Havis and Troy aren't the best for this vehicle. I've tried what these and several other manufacturers offer and the Jotto-Desk OEM insert works the best on Explorers or Expeditions with a factory console. You install it in about one minute (including coffee break) and it looks factory. Besides- the Jotto Desk is the original design to go into the OEM console.

The custom console for the explorer is the way to go. As for mounting the brains of the radios, I would recommend placing the brains in the extreme rear driver side of the truck in the pocket. The pocket comes out and there is a large space over the wheel well where you can put radio brains, siren brains, strobe packs, etc... Done it many times with great results!
