I am working with Bat in reviewing and updating a number
of the Batlab Site Web pages. The updates will be comming
as time permits, but will be focused towards the Newbie rather
than just the Professional groups of persons here.

about this, I thought a general post would be in order

If you want the part numbers for the Maxtrac
16 Pin accessory connector, here they are:

HLN9242A has: ( Reported to be a few bucks cheaper ) and
is the only kit being supplied now.

16 pin connector
9 wires, pins attached on one end, bare wire on the other (white, orange, green, brown, red, purple, black, blue, gray)
16 spare pins
2 wire ties
1 pin removal tool


HLN9457A has: [ As of 1-26-2004 is Obsolete No Longer Avialible ]

Not really, I buy in bulk, so I just order the individule pieces and a reel of pins !

The Older Kit only included the below:

16 pin connector
5 wires, pins attached on one end, bare wire on the other (red, black, brown, white, green)
16 spare pins
2 wire ties

Although one can " Crimp " these pins with a varity of
tools, it may " NOT " look like the Factory or fit easily
into the back of the Housing.

It has some very close tolerances !

If you have trouble, or a Special application we do
have the " Proper Crimp Tool " made by AMP.

when supplies were exhusted, they discontinued it

This 500.00 Tool ( Not a Miss-print ) is no longer availible
from AMP ( Period ), but we did buy this tool for a big job
with Cal Trans in making a number of very special cables
that was needed.

We had to have the insurance the wires would not short
out, or become loose, so we footed the bill for it.

If you have a Special Need for a Cable set up ( as for a R*I*CK )
or any other Professional application, feel free to contact us

The parts are AMP parts, Digi-key just stocks them. They do not catalog the housings, but they always seem to have them in stock. I've shopped around and their price for 100 pcs is competative. A few cents more than some and cheaper than others.

DK stocks several versions of the pins with different plating, mating pressure, and wire sizes. The part numbers Monty provides are the AMP Part numbers. The DK part numbers are similar in some cases, but not always, but you can search DK with either number. Be aware that their search is hyphen sensitive, so A3008 is not the same as A-3008. The contacts for 20-24 gauge wilre are DK P/N A3008-ND and AMP P/N 1-87309-4. There are a few dozen options. See:

Crimping;

I happened across the correct crimper for a 24-26 AWG contact in this series at a hamfest, but I often want or need to use larger wire. I use the AMP "Service Tool I" (There's a 'II' and I have it too, very handy) to good effect. You have to progressively form the crimp with two or three of the positions on the tool for the connection and another one or two for the strain relief. It doesn't look factory, but it does the job if you take a little care.

The shell that Motorola uses doesn't expose the locking tab to alllow you to release the contacts. The factory crimp leaves enough room to get a special tool in to release a contact. My improvised crimps usually don't. The moral of this story is get it right the first time. If you are experimenting, use an A25809-ND which is AMP part number 1-87456-1 (about $1.15) There is no latch or keying (so you CAN insert it upside down in a radio) but it exposes the release tab so you can remove and replace contacts. The 'unstamped' housing doesn't have the AMP part number stamped on it. It's fourteen cents cheaper. The stamped housing are fine as a substitute.

What Motorola recommends to crimp 2984249N01 pins?

I have checked few manuals for Waris mobile accessories, but didn't found any mentions about crimp tool. This moment for some reason not described!

Molex 63811-1000 will work?



If no or bad, please advise other good crimper under $70.

I don't know that Motorola recommends a crimper. The crimper that AMP specifies is like $400. The crimper you show can be made to work in much the same manner as the AMP service tools.
