What radios do you own?: Radar Range

Post by JAYMZ »

I have an A4 Spectra VHF High Power that starting acting up.

It powers up to FL 01/90 then flashes to SELF CHK and back again repeatedly.

I put the unit onto my control head and cable(easier to swap trunk units than take a dashboard apart) and it worked fine. Now the service manual says something about control head failure(which almost seems obvious) or cabling failure. Does the cabling failure mean the control cable could be bad or does that refer to another type of cable within the radio?

Any help would be hot...

PS. I only hooked up the trunk unit from the radio complaining of this malaise and not vice versa, I took the unit out and brought it to work with me to read the manual and look for any obvious problems within the trunk unit.

I have probly tangled with the FAIL 01/90 more times than the Taliban has ran from US bombs.

I could probly right a book bigger than Websters Dictionary.

If you email me your # directly at

I will give you a call and maybe you can explaine to me exactly what you have tried and we can go from there.

Not sure you tried another unit in the car or the unit was put on another control head and cable. If you tried the radio on another head and cable, than you might check the big red lead fuse in the vehicle. Since the radio was working in the vehicle and just suddenly started to get the error, would check for 12v on the large red lead. Have had fatigue fuses drive me nuts with this one.

Thanx to MikeB( I think that's his screen name here) for all the help he e-mailed me directly with a long but very thorough list of things to check and how to check it. It gave me a good place to start. So Thanx again Mike I am greatly appreciative.
