What is so different or similar about LTR and the other trunking formats? I am not a trunking expert by any means, just would like to know more about it.

LTR was designed by E.F.Johnson for a 20 channel trunked system and uses subable data much like a DPL to send radios to free channels. It is designed for manly Fleet only operation ... you can't cut off an individual radio. Motorola Smartnet has a designated control channels all goto data is sent over this. Each radio has its own "individual id" this is great for public service and police but I found it a big head ace with commercial app.s
Here are some web pages on both:
LTR - http://www.virtualcomm.com/cmn/faq/e/ltr.htm

Smartnet -

This Smartnet link maybe dead or being updated...
