Replacing Saber knobs

Post by va3wxm »

Is it possible to swap knobs from one Saber to another? Or do I have to buy new ones?

Got a Saber with a breaking (not yet broken) volume knob I'd like to replace with a good knob from a dead Saber.

Do they just pull off or is there a special technique?

Thanks!

It depends. In theory they're just rubber or plastic and they slide straight up off of the keyed knob-top. Best advice is to get a reeeealy thin flat blade screwdriver or a knife tip, and gently prise up under the plastic of the knob, going around and a round until it starts to come up.

I'm on vacation away from my computer right now, but if you want PM me and when I get back I can take some pictures of the process for you.

The low profile (rounded top) knobs are plastic with a metal insert and come right off like other model radio knobs. The high torque knobs are a PIA, plastic with a plastic insert. Pry like indicated above around the perimeter just deep enough to catch the edge. Once the outer knob is
off push a screwdriver into the open seam to push open the insert a bit and then pull the insert off. The inserts are somewhat brittle and I've broken more than one trying to remove them. While on the topic anyone
know if the plastic inserts are offered alone rather than buying the 2 part
knob assembly?

Knob removal.

Hello.

The best way of taking such knobs off and not risk breakage is,
Wrap a hankerchief around and under the base of the knob, then pull.
This will spread the force fully around the knob and prevent any chance of marring the radio.

Thanks all for the advice. The knob in question is a high torque one.

Does the shaft have a notch that aligns everthing up? Or should I leave the radio in the off position and put it back together the same way?

One side of the metal knob (piece fixed to radio) is rounded and the other is flat. Sort of a half moon shape if you will. It is nearly impossible to put the knob back on wrong. I say nearly because there is always someone who...

Finally got the knob fixed. It wasn't too bad. Just took my time and gently lifted the knob off using a jeweler's screwdriver.

The plastic collar came off fairly easily too. Didn't break it or anything!

Seems to be the take home message is "be patient". :D
