2004Explorer Astro Spectra Install

Post by nylawman »

I need to install a VHF Astro Spectra W3 (HHCH) in a 2004 Ford Explorer SUV (with a fold-down third seat). Any suggestions on where the transceiver may be installed? I thought of under the passenger seat (not a power seat) or flat on the floor in the area between the tailgate and back rear of the third row seat.

It's a leased vehicle so I am reluctant to drill holes that would be visible when the vehicle is returned.

For an antenna, I'm thinking of using either a Sti-Co dual band glass mount (left side rear window), a removable Sti-Co disguise cellular lookalike mag mount, or a Motorola VHF broadband spring based 12" steel whip (roof mount). Has anyone had unusual RF issues with any of these antenna systems on a late model Ford Explorer?

Any suggestions will be appreciated./Charlie

best spot for it. easy to run all the associated wiring w/o going too far back into the vehicle. and if it's not power seats, there should be atleast a deck-sized space under there.

i'm not a fan of glass mounts - but if you dont' want holes....that's proabbly your best bet.

Another good place is in the rear drivers side there is a small compartment. Open the door, take the inside pocket out, there is then a ton of room beneath and over the rear wheel well to mount anything!

Thanks Jay - Actuall mounted it under right rear seat

Jay and others - Thanks for your replies. On game day I discovered a great place to mount the transceiver. Since my 04 Explorer was equipped with a third row of seats, the right rear passenger seat folded forward to permit access to the rear row. When that seat was flipped forward, the metal seat base provided an excellent place to mount the wooden board to which the mounting plate was attached. This was actually better than the front seat in that,l when the seat was flipped forward, it totally exposed the top of the radio for servicing and programming from a position standing outside the right rear door. I wound up using my Sti-Co disguise cellular lookalike MAG-mount, pulled through the rear tailgate and placed on the right rear corner of the roof (
great reception). I'm very pleased with the install and the radio.
