Install Question

Post by dchilders »

Hi there,
I have a 1993 GMC C1500 and I want to install a radio into the dash of the truck (where the tape player is). The tape player is broken and I don't even own any tapes, so I have no use for it.

I haven't received the radio yet, but I have checked the measurements for it and the measurements in my truck. The problem is, the radio is smaller than the slot where the tape player is.

My friend suggested leaving the tape player in and installing the radio under the dash. I believe this will also work as the radio comes with a "mounting bracket."

Please bear with me here, I'm trying to learn about installing these as fast as I can :)

I guess the question here is, once I put the radio into that slot.. how do I take care of the extra space? If there is no way, would mounting it under the dash with the mounting bracket be the best solution?

You might try going to a stereo installer shop. Those guys are pretty good at building custom brackets. Essentially, you need a "faceplate" to fill in the blank space.

Ok, that's all I needed to know. I didn't even think of that. Thanks. :)

And check around... if you see lots of "bling" in the parking lot, chances are the place is doing run-of-the-mill installs and will have little to no skill in doing custom work. Find a higher-end place that has cars with massive installs and you can't even tell it. Those are the places where you find people with real skills.
