Motorola D37 Spectra RX and TX rumbling noise bursts

Post by hwstar »

I recently procured a D37 spectra, and I notice that it randomly and infrequently will emit bursts of noise (rumble-like) in the receive and transmit audio. The chips on the board have date codes of 95 and an inspection of the electrolytic capacitors on the RF, VCO and MLM boards show no evidence of leaking.

Prior posts by "Will" state that this is a common issue and that it is probably not on the VCO board.

Is it worth pulling the RF board and cleaning the contacts on the dual row connector?

I don't have a service manual yet for this radio, and I wonder if anyone else has experienced this issue with their Spectras.

Hwstar,

Yes, this is a common issue and is not caused by the VCO board.
Sounds like the caps have gone bad for sure, hard to tell by looking. What the radio needs is full going over, replacing certian caps and maybe a couple of other parts that affect the VCO, causing the noise problem. Also there is probally audio noise that adds to the problem.

Usally this type of repair I do for much less than $89.
