May the Schwartz be with you! Central NJ Stream uses MT-2000

Post by Railfaninnj »

I'm not going to repeat the entire thread here, but the Central New Jersey Wide-Area Railroad Scanner stream at http://RailroadRadio.net/ is based around a Motorola MT-2000 portable. The full details of how the stream is organized technically & how it was developed historically can be found in the Central New Jersey Wide-Area Stream forum under 'Secrets behind a dynamite stream!'

I had purchased the radio at a hamfest 10 or so years ago & was using it with a 12V DC adapter in my car for scanning the local public safety stuff. When the stream bug bit me this spring, I quickly found out that conventional scanners & even my ICOM R-7000 (-50 dB spurious rejection spec) were completely overwhelmed by the numerous public safety, commercial & ham repeaters within a mile of my QTH. To make things worse, I was using the discone I had put up 17 years ago after I had moved in here on a high ridge line in NJ. This was a severe challenge for any receiver! And then I tried with MT-2K with the DC adapter plugged into a RS 3-amp regulated PS. I wish I had a picture of the look of astonishment on my face as I sat back & listened to 99.9999% clean reception! That Jedi (at -75 dB intermod rejection spec) just ignored all the crap that antenna was picking up!

I still was getting an occasional blip of 154 MHz PD repeater & 147 MHz ham rptr, but it was infrequent enough & mild enough that I was probably the only one to notice it. So it was with great anticipation that I switched over this past week to a Traintenna narrowband J-pole design. No more blips! Just great train comms!

An interesting thing about the Jedi audio circuit is that my audio sounds different from the other streams using more recent Motorola receiver designs. My audio is softer & lacks some of the 'brightness' that you'll hear there, but it still sounds great to me & my listener base!

There is much more to the story, such as how I managed to scrounge up the J403 Universal Connector & how I managed (with much help!) to match the Jedi's balanced audio to the unbalanced Microphone In sound card of my Dell Latitude notebook, but all the details & schematics are up at RRR.net.

The Central NJ Wide-Area Stream is truly 'Deep in the heart of the state of the art'!
